‘The ones that are not represented’
Where do they go indeed, the ones that are not represented? Has the song changed? It is not freedom, we need to move to a better way of doing things. Do half the people understand? Should we make decisions when they do not know what affects them? How long has this been going on? Is there another way? Can we all live together? is there any other way? are some of the themes explored
2nd Track – Across the bridge (its hard to go back)
There is no divide in politics, in the modern world the very real threat of no negotiation means that we often burn our bridges without looking back. It creates a very lopsided way of thinking with often no results. In its first draft, this was written back in the 90’s it is very different here from then. What we often feel that we must do is at the cost something more sensitive something more better. But the conviction on one idea or ideology means we lose the picture.
3rd – Life is inbetween
Sometimes it would be amazing to taste something when so much of our world is manufactured it is hard to find something to taste. We have created so much, yet many of our basic needs remain unfulfilled. The simple things about how we live. We seem to be unsure, cause somewhere there is an ad telling us that we don’t know that and we can’t tell the difference. Inbetween the abyss there is a place where life flows and is full of magic and colours. How do we translate that into reality? We know in our dreams late at night it is there, yet we can not remember when we pick up the phone the next day. We are distracted.
4th – Interest Banked
One of my favourite tracks starts off a bit muffled and then becomes clearer. A play on words. Dealing with how much interest we have in any one person in particular when it comes to loaning money. Money in a lot of respect has distorted our relationship with one another and serves to keep the most disadvantaged in our society at bay. Its part of a circle that keeps us running around and not being able to focus on the important things. There are people that are doing nothing but live off the interest of other peoples sweat. There is a balance to be struck between risk and actually keeping someone in poverty.
5th – Never Vote For What They Want
Life is like that, we have heard it said. People rarely do what they want, so why should they vote any differently. The politics of fear is a big thing and very real in small and big societies. We focus on what people are afraid of. That then leaves little time over for what we want. Not complicated. Raise it from the bottom of the ocean where it is buried beneath the fear and maybe we find that there is nothing there. Awareness is a long and sobering game. It is real though and just a little can go much further than we expect. This song took a lot longer to do for all sorts of technical reasons. The meaning is parallel to the process. The meeting was chaired and everyone read the report and if they did not they said so.
6th – Election
The title track. As it says you can choose what you want. It is true to the degree if you can choose what is on the radio. It is a show of some sort and some characteristics. A short song, a small but big point.
7th Steam Packet (Offshore Bank Accounts)
I hear they are catching on to this in America. The Eu fair trade wonders too if big business really does benefit anyone. A simple song, sung in a low key kind of way.
big business is kind
big business is tolerant
When they make lots of money
for offshore bank accounts
8th Stand up Elected
I may have this wrong but surely the people we elected we expect them to make a point unless we elect the same people again and again only with different names.
9th Into the Sun
I remember when I was about 19, living in Barcelone as I travelled through northern Spain playing music. Trying to find meaning. I had read a book on archetypes a few years earlier but did not really understand it. When I look back now it all makes sense. So this song had to be included. Whatever I did there was a point and it did make sense. Nowadays I know that almost immediately. I always walk in the sun, but then again there is not much sun here in the winter.
